SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team opened up Liberty League play on Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center, dropping a 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 16-25, 25-21) match to St. Lawrence University.
First-year Shannon McGrath overcame a slow start to finish with a team-leading 12 kills with only one error (.306 hitting), and added 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. First-year Georgia Pool tied for the match high with 17 digs and senior Haley Kresch added a team-leading 25 assists as well for Union (6-5, 0-1 Liberty League).
Julia Giroux led St. Lawrence (4-8, 1-0 Liberty League) with a match-high 19 kills and 17 digs, while Lainey Roman also posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Union led for the early portion of the opening set, building up a 9-5 advantage after a second straight kill by junior Caroline Fraser. However, an extended 14-5 run put the Saints ahead for the first time in the match and helped the visitors take the first set.
St. Lawrence stormed out of the gates in the second stanza with a 13-2 run to take a two-set lead, but Union battled back in the third. The home team scored seven of the first nine points to gain an early advantage, and did not back down when SLU got within two at 11-9, with three straight kills by McGrath, senior Julia Webster and Page killing the momentum. Four points on the serve of junior Brooke Fleming – including a pair of aces – helped Union force a fourth set.
Union led by four points early in the fourth, but St. Lawrence came back to knot the score at nine….
