Volleyball Downs Alcorn State In Straight Sets

South Dakota State

OXFORD, Miss. – Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time this season and on a brand new taraflex court, Ole Miss put on a show. The Rebels dominated Alcorn State in straight sets to open the Ole Miss Invitational Thursday night at the Gillom Center.

The offense was lethal as the Rebels (3-3, 0-0 SEC) tied the program record for attacking percentage, hitting at a blistering .488 mark. Payton Brgoch led the way with 11 kills on 16 swings. Nia Washington followed, finishing one kill shy of double figures. Middle blocker Sasha Ratliff was also a perfect 6-of-6 in the match. Setters Sommer Daniel and Aly Borellis each shined, tallying 28 and 10 assists, respectfully.

Defensively, libero Cammy Niesen was flying all over the court. The sophomore registered 15 digs to help Ole Miss hold the Lady Braves (0-4, 0-0 SWAC) to a .032 attacking percentage.

Brgoch started the match with a bang, quickly slamming down the first kill of the night and setting the tone. Senior Anna Bair went to the service line and dropped in two aces to make it 4-0, and Ole Miss never looked back. Ratliff took over, tallying all six of her kills, and helped the Rebs close out the first set on an 11-2 run and win 25-11.

Ole Miss carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Brgoch and Washington continued to pile it on for the Rebels, dominating at the net. Looking to run away with things, Shayla Meyer sparked a late 8-0 scoring run to get set point and finished it herself, connecting on a kill to give Ole Miss a 25-8 victory.
