SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team had its season-opening four-match winning streak snapped with a 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 27-25) loss to Morrisville State College on day one of the Skidmore Classic on Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.
Union (4-1) did not hit well in suffering its first loss of the year, hitting .068 with 36 kills and 27 errors on 132 attempts. Morrisville State (5-1) had the same amount of errors, but put down 52 kills on 147 swings to hit .170 for the match.
First-year Shannon McGrath led all players with a season-best 19 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs; however, no teammate had more than four kills. Conversely, three Mustangs reached double figures in kills, led by Brianna Gates with 16 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Sophomore Kirsten Litchfield added a team-leading 16 digs for Union as well.
Morrisville State used a 7-2 run to start the match and take control of the opening frame, and Union never got closer than three points to give the Mustangs the first set. Union had its best hitting set of the night in the second stanza, putting down 11 kills to even the match at one. Down 14-11, the Dutchwomen exploded with an 11-1 run – helped by a kill and a block each from senior Denesha Lafontant and junior Keara Page – to grab back the reins and take the set.
The Mustangs again started strong in the pivotal third set, taking 11 of the first 15 points and never letting the lead fall beneath five points. Union recorded only five kills in the set, while…
