WORCESTER, Mass. – The Union College women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19) match to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Harrington Auditorium.
First-year Maddie McCarron led Union (12-13) by matching her season high with 13 kills on .375 hitting in addition to adding three blocks and two digs. Sophomore Shannon McGrath chipped in 12 kills and 15 digs for her 12th double-double of the season, and classmate Georgia Pool registered a match-high 19 digs to go with four assists and five service aces. First-year Sydney Scanlon also had a double-double of 21 assists and 11 digs.
Union put down 50 kills on the afternoon and had five players finish in double-figures in digs, but WPI (10-11) ended the day with 49 kills and also recorded 11 blocks to stymie the Union attack. Catherine Reynolds led the home team with a triple-double of 12 kills, 19 assists and 10 digs in addition to a match-best five blocks.
The opening set was close to start, featuring seven ties before either side reached 15. After Union used a 7-1 run to take a 14-9 lead, the Engineers used a 9-1 run of their own to retake the lead at 18-15 and then used another 5-2 stint to secure the opening frame.
The Garnet Chargers led for almost the entirety of the second stanza after jumping out to an early 3-1 advantage and leading by as many as six at 22-16 before closing out the set.
