NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team bounced back from a 3-0 loss to SUNY New Paltz to defeat Russell Sage College by a 3-1 score and salvage a split of two matches on day two of the New Paltz Invitational on Saturday at the Hawk Center.

Union shook off a first-set loss to pick up the victory against Russell Sage to end the afternoon, sweeping the final three sets to earn the 3-1 win.
Sophomore Shannon McGrath led all players with 18 kills and also recorded 21 digs for her third double-double of the season. Classmate Georgia Pool and junior Kirsten Litchfield had excellent days defensively with 27 and 15 digs, respectively. First-year Sydney Scanlon recorded a game-high 22 assists and eight digs while senior Brooke Fleming added 13 assists, eight digs and four service aces as well.
The Gators took the opening set and then jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second set, holding the lead for much of the frame until the Garnet Chargers scored five straight points to take its first lead at 16-15. Another 5-1 run gave Union a little separation, and three Sage attack errors helped Union to even up the match.
Two aces from first-year Maddie McCarron helped Union to an early 6-2 lead in the third set, and the team maintained its lead for the entire set. Sage closed the deficit to two at 14-12, but Fleming recorded four aces as part of a huge 7-0 run that allowed Union to alternate points the rest of the way to take a 2-1 lead.
