SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team had its five-match winning streak snapped by Middlebury College on Wednesday evening at Viniar Athletic Center, falling to the Panthers by a 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-21) score.
Union (11-4) managed only 25 kills on the evening, led by sophomore Maddie McCarron with six to go with two blocks. First-year Allie Kronenberg recorded three kills to go with 15 assists and six digs, while juniors Georgia Pool and Shannon McGrath both registered a team-best 17 digs.
Middlebury (9-4) was paced by Lillian Caldwell with 14 kills on .387 hitting, followed by Molly Harrison with nine kills and 16 digs. Gabbie O’Toole recorded 38 assists, nine digs and three kills as well for the Panthers.
The visitors put down 21 kills in the opening frame the home team held tough for much of the set. Union fought off five set points with the help of a McGrath ace, a kill by first-year Georgia Pinciaro, and two Union blocks, but the Panthers converted on their six chance to take the early lead.
The Panthers jumped out to a 10-2 lead on the way to an easy second-set win, but had to work once again to finish the sweep. The Garnet Chargers took an 8-6 lead after an ace by senior Farah Elgala and still led 10-9 before Middlebury went on a 9-2 run to open up an 18-12 edge. The home team lowered the deficit to three on three occasions, but could get no closer.
Union will begin Liberty League play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Skidmore College at Viniar Athletic Center.
