SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse volleyball will close out its two-week home stand inside the Women’s Building with two matches on tap this weekend. ‘Cuse will face #7 Pitt on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and Virginia on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ACCNX.
Syracuse trails in the all-time series against Pittsburgh, 42-11. The squads first met on Oct. 8, 1982, where the Orange lost 2-1 to the Panthers. Their last meeting was a five-set battle that resulted in a 3-2 Pitt Victory. Syracuse’s most recent win over Pitt was a 3-0 sweep on Sept. 26, 2020.
The Orange hold a 10-3 edge over Virginia. ‘Cuse won the first-ever meeting in straight sets on Nov. 3, 1990. Most recently the Orange captured a 3-0 sweep of the Cavaliers on Nov. 7th, 2021.
Friday’s match against Pitt will be a family gathering for the Akeo’s, as assistant coach Lesli Akeo will face two of her sisters, Pitt senior setter Lexis Akeo and director of volleyball operations Kamalani Akeo, for the first time. During Lesli Akeo‘s time as an assistant at Kapalama High School, she coached Lexis who was the 2018 Hawaii Gatorade State Player of the Year.
In the match against Florida State, Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk reached her 31st ace of the season, which ties for fifth on the Syracuse single-season service-aces record list. Lokhmanchuk needs eight more to tie the single-season record (held by Ella Saada, 39 aces, 2007).
Polina Shemanova is ranked third in the ACC in points per set (4.63, 37th nationally), third in kills per set (4.13, 31st nationally), and fourth in attacks per set (10.70, 59th nationally). Lokhmanchuk is ranked seventh in the ACC in aces per set (0.38, 132nd nationally) and seventh in attacks per set (9.57, 140th nationally).
Friday night’s matchup against Pitt is Military Appreciation Night and Sunday’s meeting with Virginia is Otto’s Kid’s Club Youth Day. Admission to all home events is free.
