Volleyball Kicks Off 2022 Campaign In Colorado


CHAPEL HILL, N.C.– The Carolina volleyball team officially kicks off the 2022 season this weekend, playing a total of three matches across two tournaments while on the road in Colorado. 
 
The Tar Heels will open play on Friday with a 9 p.m. ET match at Colorado State, before playing two matches on Saturday at Northern Colorado, first at 1 p.m. ET vs. UC Santa Barbara and then against the host Bears at 8 p.m. ET.

NOTABLES

  • The Tar Heels begin their 2022 campaign with eight newcomers, including seven true freshmen, which was ranked as the No. 8 recruiting class in the country by PrepVolley.com and No. 10 by VolleyballMag.com
  • Carolina was picked to finish sixth in the ACC Preseason Poll by the league’s coaches on Tuesday. Mabrey Shaffmaster, Kaya Merkler and Charley Niego were all selected to the All-ACC Preseason Team
  • 2022 will mark head coach Joe Sagula‘s 33rd season as the Tar Heels’ skipper. He owns a 645-372 record at UNC and an 848-495 career record in 41 years as a head coach
  • The Tar Heels are coming off a 21-9 season in 2021, making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016
  • Seniors Karenna Wurl, Carly Pck and Olivia Diaz will serve as team captions this season for Carolina
