Tuesday’s loss at nationally ranked Southern Virginia was more about the growth of the EMU men’s volleyball team than about the end of a shortened season.
The Royals wrapped up the 2021 campaign with their fourth loss to SVU, ranked No. 12 in this week’s AVCA national poll. Scores were 25-10, 25-18 and 25-15.
Saddled with a tough schedule in this year’s podded format in Continental Volleyball Conference play, the young Eastern Mennonite University volleyball men showed improvement over what turned out to be a 2.5-week season. The Royals were pitted for four matches each against powerful Southern Virginia and Randolph-Macon, as well as one CVC “friendly” against Marymount.
Ben Childers (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and David Ward (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) each had four kills against SVU, and were prominent players all season long in the team’s balanced attack. Nate McGhee (Newport News, Va./Heritage) had two kills and four digs on Tuesday, and finishes the year with a team-high 52 kills and 29 digs.
Josh White (Chesapeake, Va./Bishop Sullivan) had two blocks against the Knights and was one of four men to finish 2021 with at least 11 blocks. Jacob Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) led the team with 19 stuffs.
Setter Drew Bennett (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) charted 148 assists, 12 service aces and 28 digs. Neo Carter (Newport News, Va./Heritage) tied McGhee with 29 digs.
