Volleyball Position Preview: Setters - Ole Miss Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. – With 12 players returning from last season’s NCAA Tournament appearance, the Rebels are ready to run it back. As Ole Miss volleyball prepares for the first serve of 2022 on August 26, OleMissSports.com breaks down the Rebels’ setters.

With the loss of All-SEC setter Kylee McLaughlin from a year ago, the Rebels have turned to a pair of new faces on campus. Utah transfer Sommer Daniel and freshman Aly Borellis have been battling it out at the setter position during fall camp with big shoes to fill.

A junior, Daniel transferred in from Utah after appearing in 17 matches in two seasons with the Utes. During her time in the Red and Black, she played in 36 sets, tallying 11 assists and five aces in a reserve role. Daniel also saw action with the beach team, playing in the fourth pairing. The Tipton, Iowa, native was named first-team all-state after her junior and senior seasons in high school after becoming the only Iowa player to record 1,000-plus kills, digs and assists. With her club team, Daniel was named to the USA National All-Tournament Team after the 2017 and 2018 tournaments, where her team finished fifth and second overall.

Borellis comes to Oxford as a four-year letterwinner at Notre Dame Preparatory and a member of the Prep Volleyball Top-150 list. She helped guide her high school to the State Championship all four years, taking home the title in 2021, while picking up All-State honors in 2019 and 2020. A decorated athlete out of Rochester, Michigan, Borellis has racked up multiple All-American honors in her high school career, including a pair of PrepVolleyball First Team honors, AAU All-American laurels and 2021 Max Prep First Team All-American honors. She finished her prep career with over 2600 assists, 1800 kills and 1300 digs.

First serve of the 2022 season officially takes place on August 26 at 4 p.m. as the Rebels open the Ole Miss Invitational, hosting No. 9 Georgia Tech. The match will be available to stream on SECN+.
