NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A strong offensive showing from the Rebels helped Ole Miss volleyball close out a perfect weekend at the LUV Invitational with a sweep over Tennessee State.
The Rebels (2-3, 0-0 SEC) hit over .300 for the second straight match, playing clean offense. Aly Borellis fed seven different attackers with 37 assists. Anna Bair led the way, finishing with 11 kills. The senior has now finished in double-figures in all five matches this season. The defense also showed out, holding Tennessee State to a mere .101 hitting percentage on the night.
Ole Miss wasted no time, jumping out to a 10-2 lead capped off by back-to-back aces from Vivian Miller. The Rebels kept the set moving along, never relinquishing the lead as they picked up a 25-19 victory in the opening set. Bair led the attack with five kills in the set, followed by Sasha Ratliff and Julia Dyess, who each tallied four.
Tennessee State kept things close early on in the second set, but Payton Brgoch helped the Rebels build up a lead. She recorded all five of her kills in the set on just six swings, powering the offense to a 25-18 set win.
With a two set lead, head coach Bre Henry turned to redshirt freshman Tessa Jones, who made her collegiate debut. The Cleves, Ohio, native gave the Rebels a spark off the bench and fired up her teammates in the third set with four kills and a block. Ole Miss ran away with things to cap off the sweep with a 25-15 victory in set three.
The Rebels look to keep things rolling next week when they return home to host the Ole Miss Invitational on September 7-9 at the Gillom Center.
