Volleyball’s McArthur Named B1G Defensive Player of the Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State volleyball’s Amani McArthur was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Big Ten Conference on Monday afternoon. Along with senior libero Nalani Iosia’s honor on Sept. 5, it marks the first time the Spartans have earned two B1G Defensive Player of the Week honors in a season since 2015 (Megan Tompkins – Sept. 14, Abby Monson – Sept. 21).

Fresh off Most Valuable Player honors at the 2023 Dog Pound Challenge, McArthur finished the weekend with 14 total blocks (four solo, 10 assisted) which tied for first among all conference players and ranked second in blocks per set at 1.75. Her four solo blocks were most among B1G players ranking in the top 10 in blocks per set last week. McArthur’s 10 blocks against Brown on Saturday were one off a career high.

McArthur got things done on the offensive side as well finishing with 20 kills on 33 attempts and hitting .545, a hitting mark that ranked second in the B1G last week. Her 14 kills against Binghamton on Sunday were one off a career-best mark.

McArthur’s honor is the 19th of its kind in program history since the weekly award began in 2005. With the win, McArthur joins a long list of program greats that include Vanessa King, Nicole Colaluca, Jenilee Rathje, Lauren O’Reilly, Jessica Hohl, Allyson Karaba, Alexis Mathews, Kori Moster, Abby Monson, Megan Tompkins, Alyssa Garvelink, Autumn Bailey, Jamye Cox and Iosia.
