Wildcats Win First Set at No. 6 Ohio State, but Fall 3-1


COLUMBUS – The Northwestern volleyball team took the first set, but couldn’t hold on and lost in four sets, 3-1, (25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 15-25) to the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes Sunday on the road at Covelli Center.

The Wildcats (13-5, 2-4 B1G) were led offensively by a double-double from Hanna Lesiak, who registered 13 kills and 12 digs on the day. Temi Thomas-Ailara also added 22 kills, her second-most of the season, to help the offense. On the defensive end, Megan Miller chipped in with a career-high 30 digs to go with two blocks from Alexa Rousseau. Emilly Londot had 18 kills for the Buckeyes (9-5, 5-1 B1G).

Game Notes

» Northwestern had three players in double figures in kills, as Kathryn Randorf joined Lesiak and Thomas-Aillara.

» Northwestern had four players in double figures in digs .

» Ellee Stinson recorded 16 digs, her second straight match with 15+ digs.

» Abryanna Cannon had a team-high four aces in the loss.

» Northwestern attackers were helped by a match-high 45 assists from Alexa Rousseau. Rousseau had a double-double and totaled 11 digs.

» As a team, Northwestern tallied a season-high 87 digs.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Wildcats grabbed control of the set-one lead at 5-4 and never trailed to win 25-21. Northwestern led by six points at 20-14 before closing out the set, totaling 17 kills in the set.

SET 2 | Northwestern then lost set two 25-23, evening the match at a set apiece. Ohio State grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Buckeyes took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 3 | Northwestern lost again in set three to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Wildcats dropped the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set 25-23.

SET 4 | Northwestern lost set four and the match, falling 25-15. The Wildcats fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before losing the set.

The Wildcats host Maryland inside Welsh-Ryan Arena at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 14.
