Brazil showcased their volleyball prowess, dominating the 2023 South American Championship held at the Geraldão gymnasium in Recife. This marks Brazil’s 23rd title in the competition. Their place at the top was solidified a day earlier with a triumphant match against Peru, which they clinched in straight sets. They sealed their championship with a decisive 3-0 win over Colombia, scoring 25-19, 25-22, and 25-19.
The event was made even more memorable for Brazil as two-time Olympic champion Thaísa Menezes emerged as the top scorer with 13 points, earning her a spot as one of the best middle blockers. She wasn’t alone in individual accolades; Roberta Ratzke, Kisy Nascimento, Gabriela (Gabi) Guimarães, and Nyeme Costa were all recognized for their outstanding contributions.
Gabi, the team captain, earned the MVP title for the South American Championship but humbly chose to share the honor with setter Roberta Ratzke.
Meanwhile, Chile’s national team secured a remarkable 4th place finish in the XXXV Women’s South American Championship. Their crowning achievement was a nail-biting 3-2 victory against Peru. The match spotlighted Chile’s captain, Beatriz Novoa, who delivered a spectacular performance, scoring a total of 32 points. A notable mention goes to Peru’s Aixa Vigil, who accumulated 21 points.
