WorldofVolley :: ITA W: Julio Velasco Introduced as Head Coach of Italy’s Women’s National Team

Julio Velasco has been officially introduced as the head coach of the Italian women’s national team. This press conference followed his resignation from UYBA Volley Busto Arsizio.

The press event, graced by notable figures like Giuseppe Manfredi, the Italian federation president, and Luciano Cecchi, the vice president, was a congregation of media, journalists, and volleyball officials. Velasco, a celebrated coach known for his successful stint with the men’s national team from 1989 to 1996, is making a significant return. His previous achievements with the men’s team include two world championships, three European golds, five World League victories, and an Olympic silver medal in 1996. Velasco’s earlier coaching experience with the Italian women’s national team had led them to a gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in 1997.

The conference began with president Manfredi underscoring the importance of the national teams as pillars of the volleyball federation and movement. He lauded Velasco for his vast experience and deep understanding of the game. Velasco, on his part, expressed his enthusiasm for coaching a top-tier team again and acknowledged the challenge of transitioning from Busto Arsizio to the national team.

Emphasizing a new approach and respect for his predecessor, Davide Mazzanti, Velasco shared his strategic outlook. He aims to manage the team without disrupting players’ club commitments and has enlisted Massimo Barbolini and Lorenzo Bernardi as assistants, among other experienced staff.

The focus is now on preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics and the Volleyball Nations League. The new coaching team also includes physical trainer Pietro Muneratti, physiotherapists Maira Di Vagno and Francesco Bettalico, scoutman Massimiliano Taglioli, and team manager Marcello Capucchio.

The conference concluded with Velasco signing a two-year contract with the Italian Volleyball Federation, marking a new era for him and the women’s national team.
