The International Volleyball Federation has finally resolved a lengthy process, approving Gambian Fatoumatta Sillah’s eligibility to play for the Slovenian women’s national team. The 21-year-old, a native of Brikama, Gambia, will be able to don the Slovenian jersey starting from June 12, 2025.

Sillah’s Slovenian journey in volleyball began at the age of 16. She quickly made a name for herself playing for Nova Gorica’s GEN-I Volley, followed by a stint with Slovenia’s reigning champions, Calcit Volley. Ahead of the 2023/24 season, Sillah moved to Hungary to join Vasas Obuda.

Her integration into the Slovenian national team’s preparations began in 2022, anticipating the International Volleyball Federation’s approval. Despite facing numerous hurdles, the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia tirelessly advocated for Sillah’s case.

Metod Ropret, President of the Slovenian Volleyball Federation, expressed delight at the decision: “We are thrilled to welcome Neneh to our youthful team. Her inclusion is crucial for our future aspirations. While the delay in her eligibility is unfortunate, her youth promises a bright future. We’re committed to providing her with optimal conditions for her continued development.”

Sillah shared her satisfaction and anticipation: “I am overjoyed that this protracted process is finally concluded. I’m grateful to the Slovenian Volleyball Federation and my agent for their unwavering support. Although I’m saddened by the delay in joining the national team, I’m excited to play alongside my friends and contribute to Slovenia’s success in volleyball.”
