THE FLATS – Eighteen student-athletes are among the Georgia Tech students that will graduate from the Institute in commencement ceremonies held this weekend at McCamish Pavilion.
The student-athletes that will officially join the ranks of Georgia Tech alumni include two very prominent names – men’s basketball’s Dennis Scott and baseball’s Matt Wieters – who both returned to Tech to earn their degrees after very successful NBA and Major League Baseball careers, respectively.
Scott, who originally left Georgia Tech following his junior season to become the No. 4 overall pick in the 1990 NBA Draft and play 11 professional seasons, will receive his executive MBA degree. Wieters, who also left Tech after his junior season, was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2007 MLB Draft, played 12 seasons in the big leagues and was a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner, will receive his diploma in business administration.
Additionally, baseball’s Andrew Jenkins, who was selected in the ninth round of the 2022 MLB Draft and continues to play professionally in the Detroit Tigers organization, also returned to Tech to earn his degree in business administration.
Georgia Tech’s Fall 2023 commencement ceremonies are slated for Friday and Saturday at McCamish Pavilion. The Yellow Jackets’ 18 graduating student-athletes will also be celebrated during Tech athletics’ traditional graduation brunch on Friday, which features the graduates receiving their special graduation stole that recognizes them as student-athletes during the commencement ceremonies.
