Vikings Advance to NAIA Semifinals, Sweep Jamestown

West Des Moines, IA – The No.1 ranked Grand View men’s volleyball team wrapped up pool play for the 2022 NAIA National Championship on Thursday night from the MidAmerican Energy RecPlex with a sweep of the University of Jamestown by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-22. With the victory, the Vikings have won their pool and now move on to the semifinals.

Set 1: Grand View University 25 l University of Jamestown 15

The Vikings got out to a great start to begin the first set due to a 4-0 scoring run, which saw the Vikings claim a 9-5 lead. During that 4-0 scoring run, Leonardo Annichini (SO/Verona, Italy) was on fire from the service line as he tallied three-consecutive aces. Grand View kept a lead of at least five points through the middle stage of the set, but then dominated the closing stage as it scored the final six points to go up 1-0.

Set 2: Grand View University 25 l University of Jamestown 21

After dropping the opening point of the second set, the Vikings immediately countered and rattled off five-straight points to take a 5-1 lead. Jamestown slowly chipped away at the Grand View over the next few moments and pulled within two at the 14-12 mark. Grand View remained strong on both ends, however, and upped its lead back to five after back-to-back kills by Daniel Galili (FR/Shomrat, Israel) put the score at 21-16. Points would be traded in the final stages, but Oscar Manana (SR/Bronx, NY) closed the set with a kill for Grand View to make it a 2-0 match.

Set 3: Grand View University 25 l University of Jamestown 22

The third set saw the two squads match each other in the early goings with an even draw coming at the 9-9 point. Jamestown eventually gained a slight advantage and went ahead by two points at 15-17, but Bayron Valdez (SO/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) led a Grand View comeback as he scored two kills during a 4-0 scoring streak to put the Vikings in front, 19-17. Jamestown then tied the set at 21-21, but the Vikings dug deep and scored four of the five following points with Daniel Wong (SO/Campbell, CA) ending the match on a kill.

Key Players…

On offense, Daniel Galili was the go-to guy with 13 kills on the night and he led the Vikings with a total of 15 points. Francisco Arredondo (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic ) was on point setting up his teammates for scoring opportunities with 38 assists. Defensively, Erick Villar-Cordero provided 14 digs and Oscar Manana
