Vikings Handle Business With A Three Set Sweep Over Culver-Stockton

Des Moines, IA- Grand View was back in action at home this weekend as Culver-Stockton College traveled to town to challenge the Vikings. After a hot start, the Vikings were able to keep the pressure on the Wildcats as they quickly picked up the three-set sweep. The Vikings were able to seal the deal with impressive scores of 25-9, 25-11, and 25-20. 

Set 1: Grand View University 25 | Culver-Stockton College 9

Bayron Valdez (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) got the Vikings rolling with the first kill of the set which sparked a 9-2 run before Culver-Stockton was forced to take a timeout. Daniel Galili (SO/Shomrat, Israel) and Nickolas Lima (FR/Curitiba, Brazil ) got everything back on track for the Vikings after the timeout as they picked up back-to-back kills. Zeo Meyer (JR/Wheaton, IL ) wanted to join in on the fun as he soon picked up three straight kills of his own before Gioele Iacono (SO/Milan, Italy ) added on his own. Galili was able to get back in the stat sheet with back-to-back kills assisted by Meyer. And Nicolas Vattier (SO/Santiago, Chile) was the final nail in the coffin as he got the final kill of the first set giving the Vikings a 25-9 victory.

Set 2: Grand View University 25 | Culver-Stockton College 11

The Vikings jumped out to a quick lead in set number 2 thanks to a service error by the Wildcats followed up by a kill from Meyer. Iacono stepped up to earn another kill in the set to spark a Viking run which eventually stretched the lead to 7, 10-3. After a Vikings error, they quickly got back on track with a Vattier kill followed by Brendan Edington’s first kill of the set. Michael Meachem (JR/Mesa, AZ ) and Nicolas Marion (FR/Jundiai, Brazil) both joined in on the second set fun as they both registered kills. Shortly after Adalberto picked up an ace sparking a Viking run that would put the second set out of reach. Marion would be the final point as he was able to serve up an ace that gave the Vikings a 25-11 win in set 2.

Set 3: Grand View University 25 | Culver-Stockton College 20

Iacono got the Viking’s defense started in the third set when he blocked the first attack attempt of the set by the Wildcats. This defense quickly leads to offense as he picked up another kill assisted by Gonzalez. Isaiah Kalima-Izumi (SO/Waimanalo, HI ) also picked up a kill as the third set was starting to pan out.
