UW’s Huskey, Powell Named Nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year

SEATTLE – Washington softball standout Madison Huskey and volleyball star Ella May Powell have been named nominees for the 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year.

The Woman of the Year Award, created in 1991, recognizes graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in athletics, academics, leadership and community service. The Pac-12 Conference will next select 1-2 nominees from the member schools to move on to the selection committee.

The first Gold Glove honoree in the history of Washington softball, Huskey capped her UW career in 2023 with her second consecutive All-Pac-12 laurel and third NFCA All-Region nod. This past season, Huskey posted a .315 average with seven doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 43 RBIs.

A native of Cerritos, California, Huskey played in 207 games during her time in a Husky uniform, making 175 starts. She tallied 37 home runs with 133 RBIs. Huskey helped lead the Dawgs to an NCAA Regional bid in all four full seasons of her career, booking trips to the Women’s College World Series in 2019 and 2023.

A 2023 NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete honoree, Huskey has spent over a year as an intern in Washington Athletics’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department. In her role she assists in using DEI as a driving force that ensures a sense of belonging for all stakeholders that engage with UW Athletics. Huskey was also awarded UW’s George Fleming Social Impact Award and Top Dawg Award.

A four-time All-America honoree, Powell finished her career as the Huskies’ all-time leader in sets played, having appeared in every set over her five seasons. She cemented her place in the history books as Washington’s career aces leader. Her career assists rank third in Pac-12 history, second-most at Washington, and 14th in NCAA history.

A four-time All-Pac-12 selection, Powell helped the Huskies to two Pac-12 Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances, including four Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights, and a Final Four, and was twice named Pac-12 Setter of the Year.

Powell was a two-time Dean’s List member and named to the 2021 Pac-12 Honor Roll. Powell also provided volleyball lessons in the Greater Seattle area, and spent a quarter volunteering at the UW Farm, an organic farming process that grows fresh produce for various UW Dining Halls and the local community.
