Buckeyes Beat Wildcats in Four Sets, Improve to 5-1 in Big Ten Play – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (9-5, 5-1 B1G) beat RV Northwestern (13-5, 2-4 B1G) in four sets (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-15) on Sunday afternoon at home as Covelli celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX.

Northwestern held off Ohio State’s push in the first set to claim a 25-21 set win. The Buckeyes evened the match at one set apiece by winning the second set by a 25-23 margin. Ohio State took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in set three, holding off two set points. The Buckeyes scored the first two points of the fourth set and did not look back, racing to a 25-15 set win on the back of a mid-set 8-0 run.

How it Happened

Northwestern scored first but the Buckeyes answered immediately to take the 2-1 lead. After OSU led 4-2, the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to take the 7-4 advantage and pushed it to 11-7 to force an Ohio State timeout. NW scored out of the timeout before the Buckeyes broke up the 3-0 run. OSU got within one at 13-12 but the Wildcats responded with the next four points to extend the lead to 17-12 and force a second Buckeye timeout. The teams traded points out of the timeout before back-to-back Ohio State points forced a NW timeout with the Buckeyes trailing 20-16. OSU strung together three-unanswered points to close the gap to 21-19 and force another Wildcats timeout. The Buckeyes got within one out of the timeout on two occasions, but Northwestern won the set by a 25-21 mark.

The Wildcats scored first in the second set as well, but an early 3-0 Buckeye run had OSU in front 3-2. Northwestern responded to take the lead back before Ohio State tied the set again at seven and took the 8-7 lead. After being tied at nine, NW scored the next three points to take a 12-9 lead. The Buckeyes used a 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead and force a Northwestern timeout. OSU extended its run to 7-0 and NW called a second timeout as the Buckeyes held the 17-13 advantage. The score was 18-13 before the Wildcats responded to trim the lead to 21-20 and force an OSU timeout. The Buckeyes scored the next three points but NW fought off three set points before Ohio State earned the 25-23 set win to even the match.

Gabby Gonzales began the third set with her fourth ace of the match as the Buckeyes scored the first three points. Northwestern fought back to tie the set at five and six. Back-to-back Ohio State points gave the Buckeyes the narrow lead and they pushed it to 14-11, forcing a…
