Buffs Hold Annual Black and Gold Scrimmage

BOULDER – The Colorado women’s volleyball team played four sets against their teammates in a scrimmage at the CU Events Center this afternoon.

The scrimmage marked the first time that all 19 players on the Buffs’ roster had an opportunity to play together in front of a crowd in Boulder.

“Today was super fun,” said first year Lily Dwinell after the match. “It’s nice to get out and play an actual game after we’ve been practicing for the past couple weeks. It’s fun to get to know everyone and play with each other.”

CU was able to compete over the summer during their foreign tour to Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy, but being back on their home floor still had a different feel for the Buffs.

“Playing abroad was really helpful for us to get ahead of the curve,” stated senior libero Morgan Riddle. “We’ve been back for a month or so, and it was good to get back and get adjusted. We’ve spent the last couple of weeks training really hard and I think it’s paid off.”

The scrimmage also provided Colorado with an opportunity to fine tune their skills in a match setting before their opening match this Friday

“With this team, we’ve got a lot of athleticism and a lot of players that can compete at a high level,” said head coach Jesse Mahoney. “If we pass well and control the ball, we’re a really great offensive team because we have good setters.”

“There were stretches in sets two and three where we struggled to pass and control the ball and it got sloppy. So, part of the reason we do this [scrimmage] is to get in front of other people. We’re going to have nerves the first time out, and we have a lot of new players, so we need to find our rhythm now.”

Mahoney concluded that “today’s scrimmage was a good step towards that.”

CU will start their season with the Buffs Invitational Tournament this upcoming weekend. The Buffaloes’ season opener will take place August 25th against UNLV.
