Transfer Pair Earns First Weekly Award for No. 9 Cal
BERKELEY- Junior Liz Waters-Leiga and sophomore Sierra Caffo of the No. 9 Cal beach volleyball team were named the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
The transfer duo has been on a hot streak to start its first season with the Golden Bears boasting an 11-3 overall record. This past weekend the pair posted a 3-1 record at TCU’s Fight in The Fort and helped Cal to a 2-2 finish.
Beginning the weekend on court two, Caffo and Waters-Leiga picked up a gritty 21-17, 30-28 win over Sutton MacTavish and Ana Vergara from No. 1 TCU. They staved off multiple set points in the second set and handed the Horned Frog pairing just its second loss of the season.
Following that win the Bears made their debut in top spot playing on court one for the rest of the weekend. Their first court one win came against No. 15 Florida International, and it had to be earned. The first two sets both went to extra points with Caffo and Waters-Leiga taking the first 22-20 and the Panthers’ Rachele Mancinelli and Milica Vukobrat taking the second 24-22. In the third and final set, the Cal pair completely flipped the momentum with a hot start, and never looked back, winning it 15-8.
The weekend concluded with a quick 21-10, 21-15 victory over Missouri State’s Becca Bach and Olivia Muriel.
