Cortland Races Past Host Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team eked out a win in the first set and then cruised to victories in the next two sets as the Red Dragons remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 25-22, 25-10, 25-12 win at Plattsburgh. 
 
Cortland upped its record to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Plattsburgh is 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the league. 
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) paced Cortland with 10 kills, 13 digs and three aces. Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) put down nine kills with no errors in 14 attempts (.643) and had four blocks, while Lexy Bloss (York, PA/Dallastown Area) registered eight kills with one error in 16 attempts (.438). Emalee Ballou (Eden) added six kills with no errors in 15 attacks (.400). 
 
Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) finished the match with 17 assists and five digs and Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) had 13 assists, two aces and six digs. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) ended with 11 digs and Giovanna Rossi (Nichols/Tioga) had three blocks. 
 
Liya Girma finished with eight kills and 11 digs for Plattsburgh. Payton Zophy led the Cardinals with 20 digs and Jeannette Ashong had three blocks. 
 
Cortland never trailed in the entire match. However, the first set was tied at 19-19 after a Zophy kill, and the Cardinals were within 22-21 and 23-22 before Cortland finished the set on kills by Ballou and Guedez. The Red Dragons led 15-3 to to open the second set and 15-4 to begin the third set. 
 
Cortland returns home to host Oneonta on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. and New Paltz the following day at 1 p.m. in SUNYAC contests.
