Cortland senior outside hitter Hannah Southcott (Princeton, WV), junior libero Carly Haegele (Commack) and head coach Erin Glickert have received the top postseason women’s volleyball honors from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). Southcott is the SUNYAC Player of the Year, Haegele is the Defensive Player of the Year, and Glickert is the league’s Coach of the Year.
Southcott and Haegele are also two of five Cortland players named to the All-SUNYAC team. They are both first team honorees, while senior outside hitter Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) and freshman middle blocker Alexa Guedez (Rye/Rye Neck) were named to the second team and senior right side Maya Owens (Nyack) to the third team.
Southcott, who was also a first team all-league selection in 2019, has recorded 367 kills (3.95 per set), a .284 attack percentage and 257 digs (2.8 per set) in 93 sets over 26 matches. She leads the SUNYAC in total kills and kills per set and ranks second in the league in attack percentage. Southcott has registered double-figure kill totals 21 times this season. She posted 23 kills in regular-season wins over Geneseo and Ithaca, 22 kills in a four-set win at Kean, and 19 kills each in a five-set victory at Montclair State and a three-set victory at Buffalo State.
Haegele, the league’s Rookie of the Year and a third team selection in 2019, has amassed 528 digs (4.98 per set) and 48 aces in 106 sets over 29 matches. She is the SUNYAC leader in digs, second in the conference in digs per set and total aces, and fifth in aces per set. Haegele, who surpassed the career 1,000-dig mark in just two playing seasons, has reached the 20-dig mark 13 times so far this fall. She had 30 digs in a regular-season win over Geneseo, 28 digs each in wins at Buffalo State and Clarkson, and 27 digs in a win at Montclair State. She served six aces in a win at Plattsburgh and five aces in a victory at Potsdam.
Van Pelt has played in all 29 matches and ranks second in the SUNYAC with 361 kills and 3.4 kills per set. She has reached double figures in kills 23 times, led by a 23-kill effort in a five-set win over Ithaca. She also had 20 kills in wins at Montclair State and Kean and 16 kills in the SUNYAC championship match versus Geneseo on her way to being named the SUNYAC tournament MVP.
