Danielle Ellis powered Canada’s offence to secure a convincing 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-13) win over Rwanda at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games women’s sitting volleyball tournament in North Paris Arena on Monday.
Ellis tallied an impressive 21 points, including 14 attacks, one block and six aces. Julie Kozun contributed 12 points, while Jennifer Oakes and Sarah Melenka each added 10 points, rounding out a solid team performance. Rwanda struggling offensively, was led by captain Liliane Mukobwankawe, who managed only seven points.
Canada took an early lead, as Rwanda struggled to keep up. Ellis and Oakes were pivotal, consistently breaking through Rwanda’s defences. By the middle of the set, Canada had surged to a 20-10 advantage. The set concluded with a decisive serve from Oakes that forced a reception error from Rwanda, sealing the set at 25-14.
In the second set, Rwanda showed signs of resilience, holding Canada to a closer margin early on. However, Ellis’s relentless attacks and Kozun’s serving prowess, including an ace that pushed the score to 20-14, helping Canada pull away. Despite Rwanda’s brief rally, Canada regained control. The set ended with a powerful attack from Ellis, securing a 25-17 win.
The third set was dominated by Canada from the outset. Rwanda’s errors compounded their troubles, with Canada capitalising on every opportunity. Felicia Voss-Shafiq and Melenka led the charge at the net, pushing the lead to 20-13. Ellis, consistent throughout the match, delivered the final blow with a well-placed serve that Rwanda failed to return, closing the set at 25-13 and securing the match for Canada.
