Elmira Holds Hilbert to Just Seven Kills as Purple & Gold Take Two on Saturday

HAMBURG, N.Y.  – The Elmira College men’s volleyball team recorded a two-match sweep of Hilbert & SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon in its second competition weekend of the season. With the wins, Elmira improves to 3-1 after defeating both the Hawks & Wildcats in straight-sets. 

The Soaring Eagles would come out aggressive in its opening match, hitting a season-best .461% against the Hawks. After taking the first set 25-12 which saw Alberto Mauricio ’25 record six kills while the team hit .500%, the Purple & Gold would go on to take the second set by its largest margin of the afternoon (14), in its 25-11 victory to extend its lead to 2-0 in the match. Mauricio, who was hitting .652% through two sets, was assisted heavily by Neiram Galan-Canales ’23, who had 24 assists through a pair of sets. 

In the third, EC would hit .417% as a team with 13 kills en route to its straight-sets victory and a 25-15 third-set win. Overall, Elmira held the opposition to just seven kills, its lowest since holding Cazenovia to just five kills in its first season of competition (2013). Mauricio would pace Elmira with 15 kills for a .778 hitting percentage, while Edwin Sosa ’25 poured in ten. Canales would finish with 24 kills while Ayden Herried ’26 recorded 13.

In the second match, Elmira would face its toughest battle in the opening set which it was able to come away with, 25-23. The Soaring Eagles captured the set on a service error from the Wildcats. Elmira would go up 2-0 in the match following a 25-18 second-set win, which saw EC record a match-best 16 kills…
