Fighting Illini Beaten by Top-Ranked Badgers On Stuff Huff Match

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois fell to top-ranked Wisconsin in straight sets on Saturday night at Huff Hall in Champaign. The match served as the 17th-annual Stuff Huff game, with the attendance of 3,093 fans setting a new-season high for the Orange and Blue.

The Illini dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in conference play, while the #1 Badgers remained unbeaten with a 15-0 overall record and a 6-0 mark against Big Ten opponents.

Raina Terry led the way once again offensively, tallying a team-high 15 kills, her third consecutive outing in double figures. Terry also registered eight digs and one ace, moving her to 139 career aces, which ranks eighth all-time in program history.

Caroline Barnes tallied her fifth double-digit dig performance of the season with a team-high total of 12.

Cari Bohm once again brought physicality at the net, leading the Illini with four total blocks, her 10th outing this season with at least four stuffs.

How it happened

Illinois used a 3-0 run, fueled by kills from Terry and Kennedy Collins, to take an early 5-3 advantage before eventually taking their biggest lead of the opening frame at 9-6. A 5-0 Wisconsin run put the visitors ahead before a kill from Terry ended the visitors’ run. The Badgers then forced the Illini to take a timeout following a 5-1 run to put Wisconsin in front by five, their largest lead of the set. The Orange and Blue battled back with a 5-1 run of their own, tying the frame at 20 and then again at 22. The Badgers closed the first set with three consecutive points to take the opening frame, 25-22.

Wisconsin opened the second set with a 10-3 run, forcing Illinois to call a timeout. The Badgers led by as many as 10 and took a two-set led after winning the second frame, 25-15. The Illini recorded two aces in the second set, one apiece from Terry and Jessica Nunge.

The Badgers used a 6-0 run early in the third set to force an Illini timeout with the Orange and Blue trailing, 7-2. Wisconsin ultimately pulled out a 25-12 third-set win to secure the straight-set road victory.
