Former Spartan Volleyball Head Coach Ginger Mayson Passes Away

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Former Michigan State head volleyball coach Ginger Mayson passed away on Thursday, September 7. She was 68 (1955-2023).
 
Mayson arrived in East Lansing in 1985 and led the program for eight seasons. Under her watch, Michigan State produced five All-B1G selections, including Shantelle Schmidt (1986 – Second Team), Becky Belanger (1988, ’89, ’90 – Honorable Mention) and Jill Krumm (1989 – Honorable Mention). Belanger was named the Michigan State Athletics Freshman Athlete of the Year in 1987-88.
 
Mayson held the program to a strong academic standard, producing 18 Academic All-B1G honorees and the program’s first Academic All-District awardee in 1990 (Becky Belanger). Mayson’s program produced the highest cumulative grade point average in the athletic department in 1989-90.
 
Prior to her time as a Spartan, Mayson spent two seasons (1981-82) as head coach at her alma mater, South Alabama. Mayson was a stand-out student-athlete for the Jaguars where she was a four-time letterwinner in volleyball and a three-time letterwinner in basketball. She was a two-time all-conference selection in volleyball before graduating in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice/administration. Mayson later returned as head coach at South Alabama in 1997 where she led the program for six more seasons.
