WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women’s volleyball team got off to a fast start Wednesday night at the Field House as the Bison dominated the first set against Dickinson College and never looked back in a straight set sweep; 25-9, 25-22, 25-23.
Gallaudet (6-7) made only one attack error in the first set as the Bison converted on 13 of 25 attack opportunities for an impressive 48 percent. GU posted a 77 percent side-out rate (7-for-9) while Dickinson (5-3) had a negative attack percentage in the first set.
The next two sets were almost identical as each set featured seven ties and four and three lead changes, respectively. The Red Devils pulled to within one point, 18-17, in the second set before the Bison scored four straight points to take a 22-17 lead and held on to win 25-22.
In the third set, Dickinson jumped out to an early lead before the Bison battled back to tie the match at nine apiece. Later, the Red Devils took a 21-16 lead before junior setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) and freshman Citrine Lummer (Frederick, Md.) helped to serve GU back into the set. Gallaudet regained the lead with four points as Lummer got one ace and Dickinson made several attack errors. GU led 24-23 and won the set and the match on a kill from junior Emily Wright (Penn Valley, Calif.) as she smashed home the game-winner to send the crowd and Bison bench into a frenzy.
Wright finished the match with 13 kills while Lummer added eight. Giuntoli passed out 20 assists and sophomore setter Alyssa Glennon (Austin, Texas) added 13 helpers as the pair tallied six digs each. Junior Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) led the team with 13 digs while junior Malia Zornoza (Riverside, Calif.) made 12. Sophomore Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the way upfront with three block solos and one block assist.
Dickinson was led by Emma Lange’s eight kills and Camille Dofiles’ 27 assists in the loss.

Gallaudet will host the 15th annual Worthington Classic this Friday-Saturday (Sept. 23-24) in the Field House. Eight teams will compete in 16 matches during the two-day tournament. GU will go up against Washington (Md.) College and Elmira College at 2 and 8 p.m., respectively, on Friday.
