TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Maddie Greco of the field hockey team and first-year Nick Megas of the men’s swimming & diving team earned Liberty League weekly honors and four Union College student-athletes were named to their respective weekly honor rolls for the week ending October 27, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Field Hockey Offensive Performer of the Week: Maddie Greco
Greco had another big week as Union clinched a first-place tie in the Liberty League standings and extended its winning streak to seven games, scoring three goals with one assist for seven points in wins over St. Lawrence and Skidmore. The sophomore netted the game-winning goal and added an assist later in Friday’s 3-0 shutout of SLU to clinch a top-two spot, and then scored twice in less than five minutes in the third quarter to turn a 1-0 lead into a 3-0 advantage in the team’s 4-1 win over Skidmore on Sunday, the Garnet Chargers’ first victory over the Thoroughbreds in Saratoga Springs since 1996.
Men’s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week: Nick Megas
Megas put together a strong performance in the pool on Saturday against New Paltz. Megas earned his first win of the day in the 200 free, winning by just over one second with a time of 1:50.03 for the team’s best time of the young season. The first-year added a second victory in the 50 free, out-touching a New Paltz swimmer by 0.35 seconds to win with a time of 22.23. Megas also earned a second-place finish behind teammate Drew Hill in the 100 free, clocking in with a time of 49.84.
Honor Roll Mentions:
Field Hockey: Sophie Brady
Brady did not allow a goal in 75:00 of action last week, making two saves in wins over St. Lawrence and Skidmore. She played the first 30 minutes to earn the win on Friday against the Saints, then made two stops in the first three quarters before coming out early in Sunday’s 4-1 victory over the Thoroughbreds.
Women’s Rowing: Union Varsity 8+
The Women’s Varsity 8+ had the best finish among all Union teams with a fifth-place finish in the D-III category out of 15 teams at the Head of the Schuylkill. The Garnet Chargers defeated traditionally strong teams such as Trinity, Stockton, and Franklin & Marshall.
