Hokies defeat Wake Forest 3-1 Sunday afternoon


BLACKSBURG —The Virginia Tech volleyball team fought back after losing the first set to secure a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-11) over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons Sunday at home at Cassell Coliseum.

The win moved the Hokies’ record to 13-14 overall and 3-13 in ACC action.

The Hokies offense was paced by Leandra Mangual Duran, who finished with 14 kills on the day. Cara Lewis added 13 and Hailey Pearce chipped in with 10 as part of balanced Virginia Tech attack. 14 digs from Iliana Rodriguez along with seven blocks from Lewis to led the Hokies defensively.

» Brie Siverling had a match-high four aces in the win.

» Virginia Tech served up five aces on the way to a fourth-set victory.

» Leandra Mangual-Duran had a team-high 14 kills for Virginia Tech.

How It Happened

SET 1 | Despite a pinpoint serving effort, the Hokies fell in set one 25-22. Virginia Tech totaled five aces in the set loss.

SET 2 | Virginia Tech responded to pick up a 25-23 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hokies grabbed the set thanks to a strong performance on the attacking end. Virginia Tech put together a .444 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands three times, the Hokies took control for good at 23-22 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech took a 2-1 match lead after taking down the Demon Deacons in the third set. The Hokies survived a back-and-forth set to win 25-23 in a period that featured three lead changes and was tied seven times. Neither team opened up a lead of more than four points along the way. The Hokies racked up 19 kills over the course of the set.

SET 4 | Virginia Tech earned a match win with a 25-11 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row. The Hokies took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Virginia Tech finished up the set on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead of 14 points to finish off the set and match. Virginia Tech also supplemented their offense with five aces in the set.
