Hopkins Wins NCAA Opener; Swarthmore Knocked Out by Babson

Johns Hopkins swept Hunter while Swarthmore fell to Babson in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament on Thursday. 

In Fredericksburg, Va., Hopkins (22-7) won by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-8 and advanced to the second round of the tournament for the sixth consecutive season. JHU got a match-high 10 kills from freshman Simone Adam and seven from sophomore Simrin Carlsen. Roxy Karrer had five of JHU’s 13 aces in the win and Helena Swaak added 21 assists.

The Blue Jays will take on Stevens Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Blue Jays and Ducks met back on September 2 in the season opener for both teams; Johns Hopkins won that match (3-0) and is 4-1 all-time against Ducks.  Included is a 3-0 win in the 2019 NCAA Regional Championship match at Johns Hopkins.

In Medford, Mass., the Garnet fell to Babson by scores of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-21 to conclude the year with a 17-9 record. Kaylee Zhang wrapped up an incredible junior campaign with a team-high nine kills to go along with six digs. The junior made history this season by becoming the second player in program history to earn Centennial Player of the Year.
