The men’s semifinal showdowns are set between Iran and Ukraine, and Egypt and Germany, following their quarterfinal victories in the 2023 WPV Sitting Volleyball World Cup in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday.
World champions Iran defeated Iraq 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-13), facing Ukraine in the final four after the Europeans beat China 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17).
Egypt sealed their semifinal spot by opening the quarterfinals with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-9) victory over Japan. The hosts will meet the Germans, who endured the encounter with the Brazilians to win 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21).
Algeria finally recorded its first win in the tournament, prevailing against Great Britain 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 26-24). Later in the day, Great Britain bounced back with a win over India 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-12).
Rwanda also logged a victory in the classification round, outplaying France 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-21).
In the women’s tournament, China and Canada kept their respective World Cup winning starts going with 3-0 triumphs against Germany and the Netherlands.
China handed Germany its first loss in the tournament to finish on top of Group E with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-18) scoreline. Canada topped Group F after posting a straight-set (20-25, 17-25, 8-25) victory over the Netherlands.
The Germans will still move to the quarterfinals along with Brazil after finishing second in their respective pools. Also making it into the quarterfinal draw are Ukraine, Slovenia, Rwanda and Egypt.
In their respective pool play matches, Brazil beat Ukraine 3-0 (25-9, 25-23, 25-11), while Egypt defeated Mongolia 3-1 (25-13, 25-18, 20-25, 25-15).
The World Cup is a Paris 2024 Paralympic qualifier, where one berth per gender is available for the winner or the highest placed non-qualified team of the tournament.
Ten teams have qualified so far for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including France (M and W) as hosts, world champions Iran (M) and Brazil (W), Asian champions Kazakhstan (M) and China (W), European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina (M) and Italy (W), and Pan American champions Brazil (M) and United States (W).
