SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The No. 23-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team faced defeat for the first time since late October as they lost in straight sets (19-25, 18-25, 15-25) to No. 5-ranked Providence (Mont.) in their opening match of pool play in the NAIA National Championship.
The Blue Raiders (25-6, 13-3 MSC) hit .160 in the match compared to the Argos .346 on the day and were outkilled 39-46 while also recording 20 attack errors in the match.
Johanna Alcantara led the attack for the Blue Raiders recording 12 kills in the match while Camryn Rich had 31 assists. Rich also had a team-high 13 digs in the contest. Alix Stoermer finished the contest with three total blocks.
The Blue Raiders traded points with the Argos in the early goings of the opening set before going on a 5-0 scoring run to take the lead at 10-8. The Argos got a run of their own moments later scoring eight unanswered points to take a 20-14 lead before a kill from Rich ended the offense rhythm for Providence. The run proved to be too much for the Blue Raiders however as the Argos worked their way to a 25-19 opening set win to take the match lead at 1-0.
Into the second set, where both teams once again traded scores back and forth through the opening 12 points. The Argos were the team to finally break the streak as they scored back-to-back kills to take an 8-6 lead. The Blue Raiders had issues dealing with the offensive pressure from Providence as the Montana-based team put down a flurry of scoring runs to take an 18-11 set lead, their largest of the second set. Lindsey Wilson managed to put together a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to cut the lead to 14-18 but couldn’t best the Argos as the side held on for a 25-18 set win and 2-0 lead in the match.
