Luke Jata Earns Third Empire 8 Rookie of the Week Honor of the Season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Empire 8 Athletic Conference released its weekly award recipients on Monday afternoon as Elmira College men’s volleyball Luke Jata ’27 was named Rookie of the Week for the third time this season.

A first-year outside hitter out of Smithtown, NY, Jata played in 11 sets across three matches for the Soaring Eagles during the week, notching six kills against No. 17 Nazareth, nine in a win vs. Buffalo State, and eight in a three-set sweep of Houghton. He notched a service ace against Buffalo State, a block against Houghton, and eight digs across all contests. Jata recorded a .220 hitting percentage over three matches played, hitting .400 in Elmira’s victory over the Highlanders.

This is Jata’s third Empire 8 Rookie of the Week honor this season, his other two coming after the opening weekend on January 13 and the Misericordia Cougar Classic on February 2-3.

The Purple & Gold return to the action on Friday, March 2, at 7:00 p.m., when they take on the Cardinals of St. John Fisher on the road in UVC play.
