SAN FRANCISCO — Fifth year senior Magda Jehlárová was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the week as announced by the league office Monday after helping the Washington State volleyball team (10-1) take down defending national champions, sixth-ranked Texas, as well No. 18 Baylor, on the road last week. Jehlárová, the Pac-12’s active leader in career blocks (649) and this season’s leader with 1.40 blocks/set, had nine total blocks to go along with a dozen kills at a .391 clip in Friday’s road upset at sixth-ranked Texas.
A native of Prerov, Czech Republic, the four-time First Team All-Pac-12 honoree is off to another great start this season, ranking No. 21 in the NCAA with her 1.40 blocks/set. Jehlárová became Washington State’s all-time leader in career blocks (649) earlier this season and heads into the first week of conference player ranked fourth all-time in Pac-12 history.
Jehlárová, now a seven-time Defensive Player of the Week award winner, already has five matches this season with five or more blocks including eight and nine last week at Baylor and Texas, respectively.
The Cougars, up No. 7 in this week’s AVCA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll, will host unranked Washington (RV) this Thursday for its 2023 Pac-12 home opener in Bohler Gym beginning at 7 p.m. PST on Pac-12 Network. The Cougars will split its first weekend of conference play with a road trip to play at Arizona to follow on Sun., Sept. 24, beginning at 1 p.m.
