TROY, N.Y. – After another good week to start off her collegiate career, first-year Shannon McGrath of the Union College women’s volleyball team was recognized as the Liberty League Performer of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
McGrath continued to adapt well to the college game in her first full week of competition, putting down 53 kills (3.78 kills per set) on .241 hitting while also chipping in 31 digs and 10 service aces in four matches last week. The outside hitter filled up the stat sheet in a win over Castleton University on Wednesday, putting down 11 kills with six digs, five aces and five assists to start her week. She just missed double-doubles twice over the weekend at the Skidmore Invitational, going for a season-high 19 kills and nine digs against Morrisville State and adding 10 kills and nine digs versus SUNY Oneonta.
The first-year has led Union in kills in all seven matches so far this season, including six matches of 10 or more kills. She enters the week leading the Liberty League in kills (92) and kills per set (3.68) as well as points (109) and points per set (4.36), while also ranking fifth in hitting percentage (.243) and service aces (16).
Union will get its first chance to play at home this weekend, when the team co-hosts the Union/Russell Sage Crosstown Crossover. Union begins the weekend with matches against SUNY Oneonta (4 p.m.) and Misericordia University (8 p.m.) on Friday night at Viniar Athletic Center.
