WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Immaculata men’s volleyball team split their tri-match on Saturday, losing 3-2 to host Wilkes before sweeping Wilson 3-0. The Mighty Macs now stand with a 5-10 overall record on the season.
The Macs began the day with a match against the host, Wilkes. Set one found the Macs and Colonels in a neck-and-neck battle with neither team giving up much ground. The Macs owned the first lead of more than two points when John Bohrer recorded a kill to make the score 16-13. The Colonels responded in kind, making the score 23-20 before the Macs went on a five-point run, securing set one by a score of 25-23.
Wilkes jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in set two, putting Immaculata into an early hole. Immaculata spent a majority of the set working out of the deficit, eventually tying the set at 20-20 on a kill from Jack Debes. Now with momentum, Immaculata outscored Wilkes the rest of the way, securing set two 25-23.
Now with their eyes on the sweep, the Macs took the lead in set three, claiming a 21-18 lead late in the contest. The Colonels, however, went on five-point run, spurring a lead that would result in the third 25-23 decision of the day, this time in favor of the Colonels. The Mighty Macs began to run out of gas in set four against the Colonels, quickly falling into a 9-1 hole. The Colonels capitalized on the lead, forcing a fifth set with a 25-12 set four.
Wilson quickly gained a 9-4 lead in set five, which would suffice as they held the five-point lead, defeating the Macs 15-10 in set five.
