NEWARK, NJ – The EMU men’s volleyball team wrapped up its 2022 season on Saturday, taking on #7 Rutgers-Newark.
The Scarlet Knights picked up a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-9) home win over the Royals. EMU finishes its season 2-15, 1-7 CVC.
Highlights
- RU-N got out to a 7-2 lead before EMU went on a 4-1 run with points from a Ben Childers/Josh White block, a Nate McGhee kill and a Childers ace, to pull within two. The Scarlet Knights picked up the next three scores and the two teams swapped points to 15-11 before RU-N had a 5-1 tilt to move ahead 20-12. A McGhee kill and an error cut the deficit to six but the Scarlet Knights finished the set with five of the next seven points to move ahead 1-0.
- The Royals were the ones who got out early in set two, using a 5-2 run behind a McGhee ace and multiple Rutger-Newark errors to take an 8-6 lead. The teams traded points and RU-N took a late lead at 20-15 but the Royals battled back, going on their own 7-2 run with a Jacob Durren block, a Wyatt Bollinger ace and a Childers ace to knot things at 22 and force a Rutgers-Newark timeout. Out of the break, the Scarlet Knights picked up a pair of points before a McGhee kill cut the lead to one. But a kill ended the set and gave RU-N a 2-0 lead.
- The final set started strong for EMU as they tied early and trailed just 6-4 before Rutgers-Newark went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-6 lead. The Royals were able to pick up three more points but Rutgers-Newark finshed things off with a kill to take the final set, and the match.
