No. 1 Vikings Open Up Conference Play with a Road Win over Yellowjackets

Des Moines, IA – No. 1 Grand View men’s volleyball took to the road yesterday evening to play in their first conference match-up in Lamoni, IA. The Vikings took the win over the Yellowjackets in 3-sets with scores of, 25-28, 25-15, 25-20. 

Set 1: Grand View University 25 l Graceland University 18

In the first set, the Vikings would outkill the Yellowjackets 18 to 3. The team would get a hot start from Nicolas Vattier (SO/Santiago, Chile), as he would open up with back-to-back kills. A few Yellowjacket errors would put the Vikings ahead 7-2 early in the first set. Daniel Wong (SR/Campbell, CA ) would follow up Brendan Edington’s kill with one of his own, and it would further their first set lead, 20-14. A plethora of kills by the Vikings would put set 1 out of reach for Graceland, and Galili and Wong would shut this one out, 25-18. 

Set 2: Grand View University 25 l  Graceland University 15

In the second set, both teams would trade errors and points early. Until the Vikings would go on a run, getting two kills from Vattier, and a ball-handling error by the Yellowjackets, forcing Graceland into an early timeout with the Vikings pulling ahead 13-9. Bayron Valdez (JR/Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) would get back-to-back aces, pushing the Viking lead to 19-13. A couple of errors by the Vikings late would give the Yellowjackets slim hope, but Galili would get a kill comforting the Viking’s lead, 23-15, and errors by Graceland would end the set in favor of the Vikings 25-15. 

Set 3: Grand View University 25 l  Graceland University 20

A hot start once again for the Vikings would be led by Galili and Wong, who would go back and forth with kills giving the team an early 9-6 lead. Gioele Lacono would join in with the action for the first time, grabbing two kills of his own set up by Dalton Dencklau (SR/Lehigh, IA ) the first time. The Yellowjackets would thrive late off of Vikings’ errors at the end putting the Vikings on edge, but a trio of kills from Galili, WOng, and Edington would seal the conference match in favor of the Vikings, 25-20. 

Key Players…

On offense, the Vikings would see only one player with double-digit kills coming from Daniel Wong with 11 on 14 attempts. Following him would be two Vikings, Nicolas Vattier and Daniel Galili (SO/Shomrat, Israel) with 8 kills apiece. Zeo Meyer (JR/Wheaton, IL ) would tally 33 assists, with only 4 errors….
