LOS ANGELES – The No. 3-ranked USC beach volleyball team (25-3) fell to crosstown rival No. 1 UCLA (31-2) at Mapes Beach on Thursday, April 20.

UCLA scored the first point of the dual when Peri Brennan and Abby Van Winkle took down twin seniors Audrey Nourse and Nicole Nourse in straight sets, 21-15, 21-11, at the No. 2 position. The Bruins went up, 2-0, with a win at the four spot where Marlie Monserez and Jessie Smith earned a 21-16, 21-17 win over the Trojans’ newly-formed pair of graduate Ashlyn Rasnick-Pope and Madison White.

The Bruins secured the clinching point at the three pairs when Haley Hallgren and Rileigh Powers went straight sets for a 21-17, 21-18 win over junior Olivia Bakos and freshman Gabby Walker. The Trojans scored their dual point from the top court on a 21-18, 21-15 win by juniors Megan Kraft and Delaynie Maple over Maggie Boyd and Lexy Denaberg.Â

UCLA added its fourth point from the No. 5 position where Devon Newberry and Jaden Whitmarsh outlasted the Trojans’ pair of freshman Bailey Showalter and graduate Jenna Johnson in three sets, 21-19, 16-21, 15-11.

The Women of Troy are back in action to conclude the regular season against No. 5 Loyola Marymount (23-6) at 2 p.m. PT on Mapes sand.
