Boos Reaches 50-Win Milestone

BERKELEY – Returning home for the first time in a month, the No. 6 California beach volleyball team split its matches Tuesday at the Clark Kerr Sand Courts, defeating Feather River 5-0 and dropping a tough battle to No. 7 Cal Poly 4-1.

The Golden Bears (13-5) started the day with a sweep over the Golden Eagles, winning all 10 sets for the sixth time this season.

Highlighting the victory was a milestone reached by graduate student Lara Boos, who earned her 50th career win alongside Jenna Colligan on court four, 21-5, 21-6.

Cal’s No. 2 and No. 4 pairings also held their opponents to single digits in both sets played.

The final result of the Bears’ second dual wasn’t reflective of how close it was, with the final two matchups being decided late in their third sets.

Boos and Colligan earned their second win of the day in a hard-fought three-setter, using a 3-0 run early in the decisive set to take it on court four, 21-18, 18-21, 15-13.

Flying all over the court in a highlight-filled 5s matchup, sophomore Portia Sherman and junior Ella Dreibholz pulled ahead midway through set one and held on to win it 21-19. After dropping set two 21-18, they went back-and-forth in Cal’s longest third set of the season, eventually falling 20-18.

Concluding their match at almost at the same time on court three, sophomores Gia Fisher and Marilu Pally nearly came away with the win in another tightly-contested battle, as their late comeback effort came up short, 14-21, 21-19, 15-12.
