The EMU men’s volleyball team played a rivalry doubleheader at Randolph-Macon on Saturday. The host Yellow Jackets had the upper hand, though, winning both CVC matches.
The Royals never got into an offensive groove in the first contest of the day, falling by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-15.
David Ward (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) earned eight kills, while Jacob Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) and Ben Childers (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) were the most efficient with four and three kills, respectively. Setter Drew Bennett (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks) had 16 assists but also led the team with five digs.
EMU turned things around quickly in the second match, using a 4-0 run early in the first set to get the lead and momentum. They kept a small edge and finally carved out a 25-23 win on a block from Childers and Nate McGhee (Newport News, Va./Heritage).
But the Yellow Jackets swung things back in their favor with a strong second set, winning 25-12. R-MC used short runs midway through both the third and fourth sets to finish of a 3-1 win with back-to-back 25-19 tallies.
The Royals hit much better in the second outing, finishing at .198 as a team. McGhee had team highs with nine kills and three blocks. Durren matched him with nine kills. Ward added seven kills and six digs while Childers landed six kills on just eight attacks. Bennett lofted 28 assists.
Just eight days into their season, the men find themselves more than halfway done with their campaign and still looking for their first win at 0-5. Eastern Mennonite hosts Marymount in a non-conference match this Wednesday at 7:00pm. Randolph-Macon comes to Harrisonburg next Saturday for another CVC doubleheader.
