Royals Drop Pair to Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Royals finished their final Saturday series, taking on the Saints of Marymount for a pair of matches.

Unfortunately for the Royals, it was Marymount picking up a pair of 3-0 win, (25-16, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-17, 25-19, 26-24) to wrap up the day.

EMU vs Marymount – Match One

Records: EMU 10-13, 1-6 CVC | Marymount 18-6, 5-3 CVC

Highlights

  • After the Royals tied things at one early on, the Saints went on a 7-1 run to take an 8-2 lead. EMU scored three of the next four points, one on an error and two on kills by Walter Spurlock and Ben Childers. Marymount took an eight-point lead before the teams traded points and MU was able to push their lead to 10. Kills from Nate McGhee and a pair of errors cut the Royals deficit to eight, 24-16, before the Saints finished off the set with a kill.
  • EMU started set two with a 4-1 lead and were able to keep it close, holding a one-point advantage to 14-13. The teams went back and forth until, with things tied at 19 after an MU error, Marymount went on a 3-0 tilt to take a 22-19 lead. With MU ahead 23-20, EMU rallied to tie things at 23 with a pair of errors and a Childers ace. But a pair of Saint kills wrapped up the set, putting Marymount ahead 2-0.
  • Marymount were the ones to take a lead to start set three, pulling out 8-3 before a service error and a Spurlock ace pulled EMU within five. Later in the set, with EMU trailing 10-8, Marymount went on a 10-1 run to break the set open. The Royals kept fighting and, trailing 23-12, went on a run of their own, 6-1, to pull within six at 24-18. But the Saints finished things, taking advantage of a Royals service error to pick up the win.

Highlights

  • EMU started in front 2-0 in match two, thanks to kills from Childers and Spurlock. Later in the set, a kill from David Ward tied things at 11 before MU scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 19-13 lead and force EMU to take both timeouts. With a kill from Spurlock and a McGhee block, EMU pulled within four at 20-16 but that would be as close as they’d get as the Saints took the set with five of the next six points.
