Saints Win Five Set Thriller Over Comets

Aberdeen, SD – The Presentation Saints won in thrilling fashion over the Mayville State Comets, winning in five sets by a score of 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13.

The Saints got out to a 6-1 lead early in the first set, but the Comets used a 12-3 run to take control, ultimately winning the set 25-22.

The Comets were the ones to get out to an early lead in the second set, leading 9-2. The Saints would come back and take the lead at 14-13, using a 12-4 run. The set went back and forth from there, but the Saints won the final four points to take the set 25-20.

The third set saw the Saints leading 6-2 before the Comets scored nine of the next 13 points to take a 11-10 lead. But the Saints would then use a 13 -4 run to put the set out of reach. They would win the set 25-16.

Presentation got out to another 6-2 lead in the fourth set, but Mayville came back and tied it at 10. But the Saints would commit seven errors the rest of the set, costing them as Mayville eventually won the set 25-23.

In the fifth and final set the Saints got out to an 8-4 lead before the Comets called a timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Comets went on an 8-4 run of their own, tying the set up at 12. The Saints would get a key service ace from Kenzie Kuxhaus to go up 14-12. After a Saints error, a Kerstin Knopik kill would clinch the win, with the Saints winning the fifth set 15-13.

Offensively, the Saints had four different players with double digit kills, led by freshman Becca Payne. Payne put up a career high 19 kills. Also recording double digit kills was Ashley Alfonso (17), Kerstin Knopik (13), and Constence Rollins (11). Both Sydney Miller and Olivia Corey had over 30 assists, with 33 and 31 respectively.

Defensively, Presentation was led by Laura Babcock who recorded a match high 32 digs. She was followed by Kenzie Kuxhaus who had 24 digs. Rollins totaled five blocks, two solo and three assists. Allie White also put up three block assists.

Up Next: The Saints will travel to Dakota Wesleyan University on Tuesday, October 19. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30pm.
