TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman College volleyball returns this week after a six-year hiatus. The Tigers hit the road to the University of Mobile on Friday, Sept. 9 and Faulkner University in Montgomery on Saturday, Feb. 10 to open Southern States Athletic Conference play.
“We’ve had a lot of people come to us excited to have the program back, and the girls are too. It’s good for the school. I’m glad we’ve brought volleyball back. We’re looking forward to finally getting on the court and get this thing started,” said head coach Joel Penfield.
The season open was delayed by a week after two non-conference matches were canceled by opponents. With six weeks of practice and one scrimmage in the books, Penfield has been able to see what his start-up roster can produce.
“This is a tough conference. We’re starting out with two pretty good ones right off the bat. I wish we could have got some non-conference matches in, but it didn’t work out for us,” Penfield said. “We’re obviously going to be in-experienced a little bit. We’ve only got a couple that have played collegiate volleyball, but we have some good athletes who have competed collegiality in other sports. It’s going to be week-by-week, but the more we play, we’ll get better. We just want to get on the court and compete. That’s our main goal.”
Selma native and Mississippi Delta transfer Aeraeonna Manuel and senior Kamryn Harris are looking to be Stillman’s leaders on the front line. Freshman Grace Fjeldstad and juniors Taylor Roland and Madison Bubel have competed for the setter position. Freshmen Taylor Lawrence and TiAna Lawrence of Weaver, Alabama will compete at defense and on the front line, respectively. Anniston Jones of Springville, Alabama and Rebecca Brogdon of Tuscaloosa, both juniors, are expected to compete defensively. Sara Kate Nichols is another Tuscaloosa native, who will see time at outside hitter and middle blocker, joined by Gary, Indiana native Amaria Price, Los Angeles native Sadae Fuller and Birmingham native Jasmine Taylor.
Stillman’s schedule now consists of 18 Southern States Athletic Conference matches, nine at home and nine away, and one non-conference match to close the regular season as part of a tri-match at Loyola University on Nov. 5.
The Tigers were picked last in the 10-team preseason poll by SSAC coaches. Loyola, Life University (Ga.) and Blue Mountain College (Miss.) all received first place votes to fill the top three spots,…
