ATHENS, Ga. — Led by three players with double-digit kills, No. 7 Georgia Tech swept archrival Georgia, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21), in the 2022 volleyball edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate on Saturday night at Stegeman Coliseum.
Julia Bergmann (16 kills), Tamara Otene (11) and Bianca Bertolino (10) all recorded double-digit kills for Georgia Tech, who improved to 7-2 on the season with the win, while handing Georgia (9-2) only its second loss of the campaign.
After a back-and-forth first set which saw 10 ties and three lead changes, Tech trailed only twice the rest of the night — at 0-2 and 2-3 in the third set. The Yellow Jackets registered 47 kills and hit .275 as a team for the match, compared to 33 kills and a .158 hitting percentage for the Bulldogs.
How it Happened
The first set remained tight throughout the early goings as neither side separated by more than three up to a 12-10 Georgia lead. Tech turned the tide from there, taking five of the next six points to jump in front, 15-13, at the first media break. The Jackets followed the same pattern shortly after, turning a one-point lead into an advantage of five, leading 22-17 after the rally. The White and Gold would later claim three of the last four points as Bertolino closed out the set for a 25-19 set one victory.
Georgia Tech kept rolling into the second set as an early four-point run pushed the Jackets in front, 7-3. As the Yellow Jackets continued to press on, two identical runs resulting in eight of nine points going the White and Gold’s way created and eight-point advantage for the Jackets, 18-10. Tech would keep its distance for the remainder of the second stanza as Bertolino wrapped up yet another set with her kill for a 25-17 triumph.
The third set was competitive into double digits as the two sides found themselves locked at 11. A three-point run to follow, aided by a sanction given to the Bulldog staff, moved the Jackets up to 14. As the White and Gold inched further ahead, a final three-point burst put Tech up 21-17, proving to put the match out of reach. Bertolino closed out the final set as she had the previous two with a kill, this time sealing a 25-21 set three win and match sweep.
