University of California, Merced – Choi Named Cal Pac Setter of the Week For Second Time This Season

MERCED, Calif. – Serena Choi of the University of California, Merced women’s volleyball team has been named the California Pacific Conference Setter of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the league office Monday evening.

Choi’s weekly honor is also the fourth of her career, having earned the award once each in 2020 and 2021 before getting recognized twice in her junior season. Choi joins Madison Mitchell and Genna Garrett as the Bobcats who have earned four or more Cal Pac Setter of the Week awards.

Choi averaged 6.3 assists and 1.2 kills per set offensively, while adding 1.5 digs, 0.5 blocks and 0.3 service aces per set on the defensive side to help the Bobcats win their final two games of the year.

The Irvine, Calif., native posted weekly high’s of 21 assists, seven digs, six kills, and two service aces in the Bobcats five-set win over Simpson on Thursday. She closed out the season with 17 assists and two blocks in a sweep at Pacific Union. Choi, one of four UC Merced setters to see action in the finale, quarterbacked the Bobcats offense to a .462 hitting percentage in the final frame. Choi played in the first and third set. Overall, the Bobcats recorded a season-high .409 hitting percentage and smacked a three-set season-high 48 kills at PUC.

Choi finishes the season as the only Cal Pac player in the last ten years to average more than 4.5 assists, 2.3 digs and 1.5 kills per set in league play. In the final week of October, Choi reached 1,000 career assists.
