MERCED, Calif. – Serena Choi of the University of California, Merced women’s volleyball team has been named the California Pacific Conference Setter of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday evening.

Choi’s weekly honor is the third of her career and she has earned a Setter of the Week honor in each of her three years with the women’s volleyball program.

The six-rotation setter led the Bobcats to a pair of wins this past week over University of Antelope Valley and La Sierra University to keep UC Merced perfect at home on the year and extend the home winning streak to a program-record five matches dating back to last season.

Choi averaged nearly eight assists per set in the wins while also stuffing the stat sheet with 2.4 digs, 1.6 kills, 0.4 service aces and 0.4 blocks per set.

Against La Sierra, Choi tallied a season-high 31 assists and tied her season-best with eleven digs for her third double-double in Cal Pac play. Choi, along with Bianca Malaluan, helped quarterback the Bobcats offense to a season-high 61 kills. Choi also had seven kills, a block and a service ace in the four-set win over La Sierra. Choi’s three double-double’s this season are already more than her career double-double output coming into the year.

The 3X Cal Pac Setter of the Week was good for a three-set season-high 24 assists in the sweep over UAV while running the offense to a .240 success rate, the second highest mark of the season. Choi added six digs, four kills, two service aces and two blocks in front of the Bobcats crowd.

Choi is the third UC Merced student athlete to be named a Cal Player of the Week in the 2022-23 year, joining men’s soccer’s Andres Lua and women’s soccer’s Trinidad Quiroz.

Up next, UC Merced hosts Benedictine University Mesa on Thursday, September 22 inside the Joseph Edward Gallo Gymnasium.
